Civilian Recognition of Military Mountaineering Awards

The services have always maintained strong links with the MLTB and the two organisations have recently harmonised two military and civilian awards.

Mountain Leader Award (Summer) (ML)

It is possible to attend a Joint Services Mountain Leader Training (MLT) course as an MLTB candidate and gain your ML training. The MLT was formerly known as the UEL.
You may then progress on to the Joint Services Mountain Expedition Leader (MEL) and complete the ML Assessment. The MEL was formerly known as the JSMEL.
You must register with the MLTB before commencing your Joint Services course and present your logbook at the start.

Single Pitch Award (SPA)

It is possible to attend a Joint Services Rock Leader Training (RLT) course as an MLTB candidate and gain your SPA training.
You may than progress to Joint Services Rock Leader (RCL) and complete your SPA assessment.
You must register with the  MLTB before commencing your Joint Services course and present your SPA logbook at the start.

If you have already completed a military award but were not MLTB registered.

Mountain Leader Award (Summer)

If you did not register with the MLTB but hold a UEL, JSMEL, MLT or MEL award, then you could be eligible for exemption from training for the ML scheme, provided you have suitable personal experience (i.e. forty mountain days, thirty peaks above 600m, in three different UK mountain areas). The granting of exemption assumes that you are ready to undertake assessment.

There is no exemption from assessment.

Single Pitch Award

If you did not register with the MLTB but hold a JSRCI, Rock Leader Award, RLT or RCL, then you could be eligible for exemption from training for the SPA scheme, provided you have suitable personal experience (i.e. forty led climbs - at least some at Severe, twenty sessions of supervision, in three different UK climbing areas). the granting of exemption assumes you are ready to undertake assessment.

There is no exemption from assessment.

Applying for Exemption

If you wish to apply for exemption you should complete the Registration Form, ticking the relevant box to receive details about exemption; your logbook and Exemption Application Form will be sent to you. Alternatively, if you are already registered ring the Snowdonia Office to request an Exemption Form.

If you are not registered with the MLTB at the time you complete your Joint Services course; you must then go through the exemption process.

The Joint Services Centres will not credit MLTB courses retrospectively.
